Dubai AI Sandbox offers regulatory testing environment for high-impact AI solutions

Sandbox Dubai is providing a dedicated environment for testing artificial intelligence innovations through its AI Sandbox, an initiative aimed at supporting the deployment of high-impact AI solutions in the emirate.

According to Sandbox Dubai, the initiative enables AI solutions to be tested in an experimentation and regulatory environment in coordination with relevant regulators and government entities. The focus is on bringing innovators and authorities together as technologies move towards deployment.

The Sandbox Dubai website currently provides a link to apply to the AI Sandbox. Its official overview describes the programme as part of a wider approach to regulatory modernisation, allowing companies to test products, services and business models under adaptive regulatory supervision.

Across the broader Sandbox Dubai platform, businesses can test market-ready innovations in a controlled, real-world environment, with temporary regulatory relief and guidance from regulators and industry experts. The platform says this approach helps companies navigate regulatory barriers while giving authorities evidence to inform future rules.

Sandbox Dubai’s general application framework targets startups, scale-ups and established businesses with innovative solutions that face significant regulatory challenges or a lack of regulatory clarity. Participation is assessed by regulators and subject experts, with experiment-specific scope and criteria provided for individual sandboxes.

Companies who can apply include those who have an AI solution facing a material regulatory or policy barrier, or require access to data that is currently inaccessible to test or deploy their AI solution, or have developed a genuine AI innovation sufficiently mature for experimentation are currently established, or plan to establish, in Dubai and/or elsewhere in the UAE.

Any company from any sector can apply but those of particular interest are education, tourism hospitality, transport and mobility, logistics, media, and government services.

The AI initiative sits alongside Sandbox Dubai’s other sector-focused programmes, including PropTech, healthcare and the gig economy. The wider platform forms part of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which aims to double the size of Dubai’s economy over a decade and position the emirate among the world’s top three city economies.

For AI companies, the initiative’s central proposition is a setting in which to test innovations while engaging with the authorities responsible for their deployment. For regulators, it provides an opportunity to examine emerging technologies through experimentation rather than policy development alone.
