Saudi Sanabil Investments, a wholly owned company by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), and Orbit Startups have launched a new accelerator program aimed to invest in tech, Web3, healthcare and mobility.

Sanabil Accelerator by Orbit aims to support early-stage startups from Saudi Arabia and the MENA region as well as global startups seeking to expand into the region, according to a press release. The program will focus on key sectors, including fintech, healthcare, e-commerce, mobility, and logistics, among others.

Startups will receive an initial investment of $100,000 and access to follow-on funding. They will participate in an in-person market orientation in Riyadh and receive hands-on support from Orbit’s network of partners, mentors and investors.

The Estonian Ministry of Social Affairs has partnered with the UAE to develop innovative solutions in the digital health sector using blockchain technology.

As per the press release, the partnership aims to address future challenges and create added value in the UAE’s healthcare system, leveraging Estonia’s leadership in digital health to improve the quality and efficiency of medical services in the UAE. It is designed to help the UAE adopt advanced digital systems, including e-prescriptions, artificial intelligence, and blockchain technology, to improve services and ensure the security and confidentiality of health data.

Janika Merilo, Head of the Digital Health and Care Department at the Estonian Ministry of Social Affairs, expressed her enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, “We are pleased to announce this strategic partnership with the UAE, which represents a global model for digital transformation. Merilo emphasized that Estonia’s experience in digital transformation has shown how technologies like e-prescriptions and blockchain can revolutionize healthcare delivery.

Since adopting a comprehensive digital health system in 2008, Estonia has become a world leader in this field, managing over 40 million electronic health records. The system facilitates more than 2.3 million monthly interactions between doctors and patients, with 99% of prescriptions issued electronically. This digital approach has saved Estonia an estimated 2% of its annual GDP by reducing paperwork and enhancing efficiency.

Estonia’s use of blockchain technology to protect health data from cyber threats aligns with the UAE’s emphasis on improving cybersecurity in healthcare systems. This collaboration aims to build a safer and more sustainable health system in the UAE.

Estonia and UAE will work together to enhance security through blockchain will foster trust in the healthcare system, and ongoing innovations will contribute to building a sustainable, advanced healthcare model for the UAE.

This agreement comes as the Saudi government works to support tech development in the Kingdom. Recently The Hashgraph Association (THA), the Swiss-based organization at the forefront of global Blockchain digital enablement, signed a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Investment of Saudi Arabia (MISA) to launch a “DeepTech Venture Studio” in Riyadh worth $250M USD over five years (2024-2028).

The Abu Dhabi Department of Health, the healthcare regulator, has signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Abu Dhabi Health Data Services (ADHDS), the operator of Abu Dhabi’s Health Information Exchange (HIE) platform “Malaffi”, and MSD GCC, a leading biopharmaceutical company, to experiment with blockchain technology for pharmaceutical industry.

The MoU was signed by H.E. Dr. Noura Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), Ashraf Mallak, Managing Director from MSD GCC, and Kareem Shahin, Acting CEO from ADHDS on the sidelines of Arab Health 2024.

As per the press release, the agreement will see the three entities come together and collaborate to assess blockchain potential, while utilizing the neutral platform of the PharmaLedger Association (PLA), a non-profit global organization, to assess the technology and framework potential to support Abu Dhabi in achieving its ambitious vision of fortifying its healthcare ecosystem.

MSD GCC will play a pivotal role in this collaboration by providing its thought leadership and leveraging its extensive experience with blockchain technology across various application areas and markets.
