Gate crypto exchange uses USDT in its Gate Card offering

Gate is doubling down on the real-world utility of stablecoins, positioning USDT as a spendable payment asset rather than simply a trading instrument, through its Gate Card offering that enables users to make purchases directly with digital assets while earning cashback rewards.
The crypto exchange says its Gate Card allows users to spend USDT, Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), and GateToken (GT) without first converting those assets into fiat currency. Instead, the card automatically converts digital assets at the point of sale, enabling users to transact through existing payment infrastructure while merchants receive fiat settlements.
The move comes as stablecoins continue their march beyond trading and settlements into everyday commerce. According to data cited by Gate, crypto payment card transaction volume has climbed to $12.5 billion, representing a 140% increase from the start of the year, with USDT and USDC accounting for more than 80% of tracked card transactions.
Stablecoins Shift From Trading Tool to Payment Rail
For years, stablecoins such as USDT primarily served as liquidity tools for crypto traders and as a means of transferring value across blockchain networks. That narrative is changing as payment providers increasingly integrate stablecoins into consumer spending products.
Gate argues that stablecoins are particularly well-suited for payments because their value remains relatively stable compared with other cryptocurrencies, reducing volatility concerns for both consumers and merchants. When a purchase is made, the stablecoin is converted into fiat currency behind the scenes while the transaction is processed through traditional payment networks.
Global Reach With Visa and Mastercard Networks
The Gate Card is connected to the Visa and Mastercard payment networks and can be used across more than 200 countries and regions at approximately 150 million merchants worldwide, according to the company. The card supports online purchases, in-store transactions, ATM withdrawals, and integrations with Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Gate offers two spending models. Users can either spend directly from linked crypto accounts through an “instant-spend” option or preload funds through a more traditional prepaid-card structure.
Up to 8% Cashback
A central part of the product is its rewards program, launched in July 2026, which features a six-tier structure ranging from T0 to T5. Cashback starts at 1% and rises to as much as 8%, depending on a user’s Gate VIP status or monthly spending volume. Rewards are distributed as points, with every 100 points redeemable for 1 USDT.
The company says points do not expire, although transactions such as withdrawals, fee payments, reloads, and refunded purchases are excluded from reward calculations.
Part of a Broader Industry Trend
The launch reflects a wider push across the digital asset industry to bridge the gap between crypto ownership and everyday usability. While much of the stablecoin conversation has centered on cross-border payments, remittances, and institutional settlement, consumer-facing payment cards are increasingly becoming a key battleground for adoption.
As competition intensifies among crypto exchanges and fintech providers seeking to make stablecoins a practical spending tool, products such as Gate Card highlight how the industry is evolving from speculative trading toward real-world financial utility. With stablecoin payment infrastructure continuing to mature, spending digital dollars at the checkout counter may be becoming as routine as using a conventional debit card.
