OKX’s Global Chief Commercial Officer, Lennix Lai, has shared insights on latest trading data especially as BTC reaches a new fresh ATH. According to Lai, the latest trading data reveals that Ethereum has surpassed Bitcoin as OKX’s most traded cryptocurrency.

Ethereum has captured 27% of spot volume despite BTC recently setting a new all-time high of $110,730. Ethereum overtaking Bitcoin is a first for this year.

As per OKX, which is licensed in the UAE, the numbers tell the story. ETH now captures nearly 27% of spot volume versus Bitcoin’s 26.5%, completely flipping April’s dynamic when BTC dominated at 38% while Ethereum lagged below 20%.

According to Lai, this signals a distinct rotation as traders reposition while Bitcoin consolidates near all-time highs, despite BTC recently hitting a fresh record of $110,730. Even with the SEC’s delays on ETH staking ETFs, the Ethereum narrative is clearly gaining traction, potentially driven by anticipation around upcoming upgrades (e.g. Fusaka) and bullish news of TradFi institutions building Ethereum L2s to tokenize RWAs.

He adds, “What makes this shift even more remarkable is that it’s happening amid surging overall activity – we saw spot trading volume jump by 60% week-over-week in the second week of May, with momentum continuing as volumes climbed another 6% the following week while both ETH and BTC continued their rallies. The timing of this shift really shows us how the market is maturing.”

With Bitcoin futures open interest hitting a record $72 billion, Coinbase joining the S&P 500, and the GENIUS Act clearing the Senate in the US, OKX is seeing more clarity and potentially even deregulation in certain jurisdictions.

Lai concludes, “I think these are early signs of a more sophisticated market cycle where capital flows toward growth potential rather than simply chasing Bitcoin’s momentum. While corporate treasuries keep adding Bitcoin to their books, Ethereum’s comeback on our platform suggests we’re entering a more nuanced phase where traders are backing multiple horses in this bull market rather than putting all their chips on Bitcoin.”

While the rumor mill across the crypto ecosystem over the past days speculated that countries such as Qatar, UAE, and Saudi Arabia were investing in Bitcoin, Mubadala, Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, disclosed a $408.5 million stake in IShare Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) in a 13F filing released on My 15th 2025.

The fund reported holding 8,726,972 shares as of March 31, 2025, an increase from 8,235,533 shares reported at the end of 2024. This increased exposure showcases the perception change regarding Bitcoin and crypto in general after President Trump has taken office.

Back at the end of 2024, UAE Mubadala, a sovereign investment fund, revealed in an SEC Filing that in late 2024 it invested $436 million worth in BlackRock’s Ishares Bitcoin Trust ETF. The disclosure was made through a 13F filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

At the time while Mubadala’s investment in Bitcoin while not directly but through an ETF is a significant departure from the usual investments made by Sovereign funds in the Middle East and GCC region.

The UAE in particular has been showcased as having 30% of its population owning crypto. Prior to this announcement another UAE sovereign wealth fund, through one of its subsidiaries FSI ( FS Innovation) agreed with US based Marathon digital holdings, a digital asset mining company establishing and operating facilities for digital asset mining in Abu Dhabi. The initial phase consisted of two digital asset mining sites comprising 250 MW (megawatts) in Abu Dhabi UAE. Marathon Holdings will own 20% of the joint company in UAE only. The cost of the project being $406 million.

Bahrain Restaurant Group also announced investment in Bitcoin

As per the news on Zawya, the Group has purchased Bitcoin in partnership with U.S. based 10X Capital, becoming the first publicly traded company in the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Gulf Cooperation Council (“GCC”), and the Middle East to acquire Bitcoin as a treasury asset.

Al Abraaj has acquired an initial amount of 5 Bitcoin with plans to build on this initial purchase and begin allocating a significant portion of its corporate treasury into Bitcoin.

As per the announcement, Al Abraaj considers Bitcoin to be its reserve treasury asset. Al Abraaj is a profitable company, with 2024 EBITDA of USD $12.5 million.

Bahrain based Al Abraaj Restaurants Group B.S.C. (Ticker: ABRAAJ) (“Company”), a public listed company on the Bahrain Bourse, announced that it has put Bitcoin on its balance sheet.

This move is designed to enhance the company’s asset portfolio and capitalize on emerging opportunities within the capital markets. Al Abraaj aims to innovate with shari’a compliant financial instruments to give the Islamic world broader exposure to Bitcoin.

The Company has partnered with 10X Capital, the NYC-based investment firm with a track record of managing treasury assets for publicly listed companies, and advising and capitalizing listed Bitcoin Treasury Companies, including most recently advising Nakamoto on its $710M financing (Nasdaq:KDLY), the largest capital raise to launch a Bitcoin Treasury Company and the largest private placement for any public bitcoin-related transaction ever. In collaboration with 10X, the Company plans to raise capital to acquire additional Bitcoin, with a goal of maximizing Bitcoin per share.

“Our initiative towards becoming a Bitcoin Treasury Company reflects our forward-thinking approach and dedication to maximizing shareholder value,” said Abdulla Isa, Chairman of the Bitcoin Treasury Committee of Al Abraaj Restaurants Group B.S.C.. “We believe that Bitcoin will play a pivotal role in the future of finance, and we are excited to be at the forefront of this transformation in the Kingdom of Bahrain. 10X is a proven leader in advising and bringing capital to listed Bitcoin Treasury Companies, and we welcome their partnership in helping us build the MicroStrategy of the Middle East.”

“I’d like to congratulate Abdalla Isa and the team at Al Abraaj for adopting Bitcoin at the corporate treasury level, finally enabling anyone in the GCC with a brokerage account to gain Bitcoin exposure,” said Hans Thomas, CEO of 10X Capital. “Bahrain continues to be a leader in the Middle East in Bitcoin adoption, backed by a forward-thinking regulatory framework.” Mr. Thomas added, “The GCC, with a combined GDP of $2.2 trillion—larger than Canada, Russia, Italy, Brazil, Australia, South Korea, or Spain—over $6 trillion in sovereign wealth funds, and a population of just 57.6 million, has until now lacked a publicly listed Bitcoin treasury company like Strategy (Nasdaq: MSTR), Tesla (Nasdaq: TSLA), or Metaplanet (Tokyo: 3350.T). That changes today with ABRAAJ’s historic Bitcoin purchase, giving investors across Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, and Oman access to Bitcoin through a publicly traded stock. In fact, almost anyone in the world can buy ABRAAJ stock by registering with the Bahrain Bourse.”

Al Abraaj Restaurants Group B.S.C. will implement robust custody, portfolio risk management and governance policies to oversee its Bitcoin holdings, including by creating a Bitcoin Committee that will consist of experienced Bitcoin investors and portfolio managers and global capital markets experts. The company intends to provide regular updates to shareholders and stakeholders regarding its Bitcoin-related activities.

Recently Michael Saylor encouraged sovereign wealth funds in GCC to invest in Bitcoin.

Michael Saylor an American entrepreneur and business executive and the executive chairman and co-founder of MicroStrategy, a company that provides business intelligence, mobile software, and cloud-based services in an interview with Al Arabiya English notes that GCC banks could become trusted digital asset custodians, while he calls for their sovereign wealth funds to buy Bitcoin.

In the Al Arabiya English interview with Hadley Gamble, he works to convince the globe on why Bitcoin is the center of the AI economy, and why countries including KSA, Kuwait, Qatar, and UAE as well as the rest of the world should buy Bitcoin. He then states that GCC region with its low taxation, its digital asset regulations, and its trusted banking sector could become the trusted digital asset custodians for the digital economy.

He starts with the fact that there is a change in the status quo and how digital capital is a no brainer, it is like Facebook for money, Google for money because Bitcoin is digital gold and a non-sovereign store of assets, allowing investors to avoid counter party risk.

He adds that it is a safe haven better than gold, 10X more valuable than gold and is growing in value at 20% a year. He says, “It is the best investment idea in the world, and people just want to keep their money, usually doing it through buying real estate, equities, collectible, which all have risk factors.

With increased uncertainty and losing confidence in governmental currencies which are facing a lot of risk because of technology, politics and monetary policy, they will trade it in for Bitcoin. For him Bitcoin is a hedge growing by 55% 2 trillion now to 20 trillion in four years and 280 trillion in 2045.

He goes on to note that this is the dominant network. He also states that USD stablecoin demand is increasing

His case against Gold

He believes that given gold is not as liquid as money, and not a sellable commodity like it was 1000 years ago, it isn’t fast enough. He explains, “400 million companies across the globe cannot settle with gold. To settle $10 billion of gold it would take 10 years.” According to Saylor, Bitcoin represents digital gold, the most liquid and fungible commodity asset, better than gold that can be teleported in seconds, put on 5 billion smart phones, with 0% inflation.

He adds that cash settlement is always difficult but with Bitcoin you can settle billions every four hours. He calls it the “perfect money, perfect capital, that will build an entire digital economic system.”

When asked why people aren’t using it to buy stuff, he simply states, “You don’t pay for things in capital. Money has two aspects high frequency money like the dollar and Euro, and Peso which people don’t hold for more than four years, with local currencies being held only for weeks or months especially in countries like Egypt and Lebanon. 90% of people don’t save in dollars, they save in land, real estate, equities, and Bitcoin.

He also believes that once the United States regulates stablecoins its market cap will go up to $2 trillion.

The digital economy fused with AI will need Bitcoin

He reasserts what we all know already that the future is digital. He believes everything will be tokenized starting with the dollar. According to him given that AI will be prevalent and it will be smarter and faster, “your AI will want to move your money for better investment opportunities 18 million times an hour.” The intelligent economy will bypass regulated economies. So countries need to advance their regulatory environments, while ensuring ethically responsible friction free environment.

How the GCC countries can benefit

There are many ways countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and UAE can benefit from the rise of digital economies and Bitcoin. First according to Saylor, they could become the repositer of digital energy which is more important for the AI datacenters than it is for Bitcoin. He states, “The AI economy will need massive amounts of energy 400 GWs of electrical power to move forward. If an economy doesn’t have electricity it doesn’t think. He believes nuclear technologies will power the intelligent economy.

He calls on sovereign wealth funds in GCC to invest in Bitcoin, telling them to buy as much as they can buy. “You ought to buy as much as you want money, returns of 29% a year for 21 years.

He also adds that the GCC banking sector could become institutional custodians for Bitcoin. He explains, “digital currencies will want to find a home that has favorable tax regimes, favorable regulations and they will be looking for institutional grade custodians, banks that I trust in the UAE, Qatar, or Kuwait where I can custody my bitcoin, a Bitcoin custodian Bank.”

He adds that we have yet to see who will emerge as a digital Switzerland.

The Risks

According to Saylor there are no risks or impediments to Bitcoin except the regulatory ones.

While he mentions that Armada Spanish fleet hit Gold, he doesn’t mention that a lack of internet could hit Bitcoin, or the fact that if Bitcoin becomes centralized into the hands of the few, it defeats the purpose of the technology, or even the fact that if quantum computing prevails, the security of the Bitcoin network could be at risk.

So while he calls for sovereign wealth funds to buy Bitcoin as he create security products for investors of Bitcoin, and while Micro Strategy invests billions of dollars into Bitcoin, the risks are there even if smaller than the risks of 20th century money.

So yes it might be a great idea for sovereign funds to diversify their portfolios into Bitcoin, it might not be a good idea to try and buy so much that Bitcoin becomes a new central bank digital currency, and definitely not the smartest idea to have banks custody the Bitcoin!

Phoenix Group PLC (ADX:PHX), a global cryptocurrency, blockchain, and next-generation digital asset infrastructure company, is now one of the top 10 crypto mining entities globally. Recently it announced that it has a total crypto mining operational capacity in Ethiopia of 132 MW after just adding 52 MW in the country. In total Phoenix Group now has a Bitcoin mining capacity of 500 MW across five countries globally, including operations in UAE, GCC, America, Canada and Ethiopia.

Munaf Ali, CEO & Co-Founder of Phoenix Group, said, “Phoenix Group has rapidly become a leading force among the top 10 global Bitcoin mining companies, a testament to our strategic foresight in securing prime locations with abundant, low-cost energy and our operational excellence driven by vertical integration and cutting-edge technology. The opportunities for future growth are immense, and we are committed to aggressively expanding our global footprint in key energy markets.”

Earlier this year, Phoenix Group entered Ethiopia with an 80 MW power purchase agreement (PPA), laying the groundwork for efficient, low-cost, and sustainable operations in a strategically important region. The newly secured 52 MW site will be developed in two phases. Phase 1 will deliver 20 MW of capacity, activating 5,300 high-efficiency air-cooled mining units with an expected output of 1.2 EH/s. Phase 2, set for completion by the end of Q2 2025, will add a further 32 MW, using hydro-cooling technology. Once fully operational, the site’s total hash rate is projected to double to approximately 2.4 EH/s.

Sustainable crypto mining in Ethiopia

Reza Nedjatian, CEO of Phoenix Mining, AI & Data Centers, added, “With 132 MW now running on clean hydropower, we’re proud to set a new benchmark for sustainable mining in Africa and deliver large-scale operations in energy-rich regions.”

Phoenix Group’s Ethiopian operations rank among the most sustainable in global Bitcoin mining, with 90% of their energy sourced from renewable hydropower via the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

In an interview with CNBC Crypto Weekly show Munaf Ali discussed the huge Bitcoin mining project in Abu Dhabi UAE that was designed built and operated by the company. The site occupies 80,000 square meters with 45,600 servers. He noted that this is one of the largest sites in the world.

The Future of Bitcoin mining is in electricity and power

The future of Bitcoin mining according to Munaf Ali is contingent on electricity. In his interview with Henri Arslanian he notes, there is a grab for power, everyone wants to have access to electricity because data processing is a new commodity, whether it is for bitcoin mining, AI, Web3 or DeFi, everybody needs electricity for these datacenters being built.

These comments come as The UAE government works on its energy needs with the launch of XRG, an international energy investment company that will focus on projects across the spectrum, from gas to chemicals to low carbon fuels to energy infrastructure. The energy investment company was launched by ADNOC in November 2025 with the aim to have $80 billion in assets under management by 2035.

XRG was launched by Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman of Masdar and ADNOC. He noted at the time that global energy demand is set to rise dramatically, increasing from 9,000 GW to 15,000 GW by 2035 and potentially reaching 35,000 GW by 2050—a staggering 250% increase. The rise of AI applications like ChatGPT, which consumes ten times the energy of a single Google search, is accelerating this trajectory.

Mubadala’s investment in Bitcoin while not directly but through an ETF is a significant departure from the usual investments made by Sovereign funds in the Middle East and GCC region.

It reflects a growing interest in the UAE in Bitcoin and crypto assets.

The UAE in particular has been showcased as having 30% of its population owning crypto.

The initial phase consisted of two digital asset mining sites comprising 250 MW (megawatts) in Abu Dhabi UAE. Marathon Holdings will own 20% of the joint company in UAE only. The cost of the project being $406 million.

ADQ in addition also registered Zero Two, to launch its digital assets business in Abu Dhabi UAE to offer latest generation technologies. Zero Two aimed to build and operate data center and offer digital asset management services as part of ADQ’s digital asset strategy. Prior to that rumors circulated in 2024 that a Qatar sovereign fund was investing in Bitcoin, but nothing was ever verified.

Recently as well, Wisconsin’s investment board increased its holdings in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) to over 6 million shares. The state fund was the first of its kind to report a bitcoin ETF purchase in 2024.

Hamilton, a Real-World Assets (RWA) protocol built on Bitcoin, redefining access to traditional financial instruments like U.S. Treasuries, real estate, and funds by turning them into secure, accessible digital assets a protocol has closed a $1.7M pre-seed funding round led by DisrupTech Ventures.

With participation from CMS, DeSpread, Hyperithm, Core Ventures, and other strategic investors, it is bridging traditional finance with Bitcoin by making tokenized real-world assets—such as T-Bills, Sukuk, and real estate—accessible to institutions and individuals worldwide.

Hamilton is co-founded by Egyptian nationals, Mohamed Elkasstawi and Ehab Zaghloul, seasoned blockchain and fintech innovators.

Hamilton, leverages Bitcoin’s unmatched security and decentralization to tokenize real-world assets. With the RWA market projected to reach $30 trillion by 2030, Hamilton is creating a protocol to make financial products globally accessible and inclusive, with a strong focus on emerging markets.

“Bitcoin isn’t just digital gold—it’s the foundational layer of future capital markets,” said Mohamed Elkasstawi, CEO of Hamilton. “With unparalleled security, decentralization, and resilience, Bitcoin provides the ideal infrastructure to democratize access to capital markets for everyone, everywhere.”

Hamilton tackles systemic barriers to financial access by offering low-cost, stable financial products—managed by top asset managers—for emerging markets, where currency devaluation and economic instability restrict growth and financial security.

The company is launching three flagship offerings: HUSD, the first Bitcoin-native stablecoin backed by U.S. Treasury bills; HUST, tokenized U.S. Treasuries; and Publius, a platform enabling financial institutions to securely tokenize any asset on Bitcoin. Together, these offerings provide institutions and individuals with seamless access to capital markets on the world’s most decentralized network.

The protocol’s inaugural transaction, completed on July 4, 2024, marked a significant milestone by tokenizing U.S. Treasury bills on Bitcoin Layer 2 solutions Stacks, Core, and BoB. The timing, coinciding with America’s Independence Day, reflects Hamilton’s vision of advancing financial independence and innovation through decentralized finance (DeFi).

Speaking to Lara on the Block, El Kasstawi stated, ” Tokenization will unlock liquidity which is not only global need but also a bigger one in the MENA region. I would never trust real world assets on a ledger that’s not immutable and never had a down time. That’s why we chose to tokenize on Bitcoin and we are the first to do so.”

“Investments in gold, Treasury bills, and fixed income products have traditionally been exclusive to individuals and institutions with millions in capital. Hamilton is breaking down these barriers through tokenization, enabling anyone, anywhere in the world, to participate in these institutional-grade investments with just one dollar,” said Malek Sultan, Co-Founder and Partner of DisrupTech Ventures.

Tokenization in the region has become a center of investment and deals, with the latest being DAMAC’s $1 billion tokenization of its assets.

In July 2024 Hamilton launched tokenized United States Treasury bonds on Bitcoin layer-2 blockchains. The company claimed the launch is the first of its kind. Hamilton U.S. T-Bills (HUST) were said to be available on the Stacks, Core and BoB (Build on Bitcoin) Bitcoin layer-2 solutions. The first transaction with HUST occurred on July 4th 2024.
