A leading UAE bank, Emirates NBD, has invested in a crypto custodian service provider, Zodia Custody, which is seeking to be licensed in UAE. Zodia Custody is backed by Standard Chartered, SBI holdings and others.

As per the announcement, the strategic equity investment was made by Emirates NBD’s Innovation Fund, the bank’s corporate venture fund.

Headquartered in London, Zodia Custody tailors digital asset custody solutions for institutional clients in alignment to regulatory requirements, ensuring institutions can make informed investment decisions according to market trends with the highest levels of security.

This week as well, Emirates NBD, added, its fifth member of its Digital Asset Lab, Chainlink, the standard for onchain finance, verifiable data, and cross-chain interoperability. Chainlink will join other founding members including PwC, Fireblocks, R3 and Chainalysis.

This also comes days after UAE based Zand Bank, an AI powered digital bank, received a full VASP license from Dubai’s virtual assets regulatory authority (VARA) allowing it to offer crypto custodial services. The license allows Zand to offer crypto and digital asset custodial services to institutional investors and qualified investors.

Emirates NBD, a banking group with presence in Middle East, North Africa, and Türkiye (MENAT) region, has added its fifth member of its Digital Asset Lab, Chainlink, the standard for onchain finance, verifiable data, and cross-chain interoperability. The Digital Asset Lab was launched in May 2023 at the Dubai FinTech Summit, to accelerate digital asset and financial services innovation in the UAE.

The Digital Asset Lab has implemented groundbreaking solutions for Emirates NBD, such as offering crypto products in retail banking using loyalty program points, tokenized real-world assets such as bonds for Emirates NBD Capital, stablecoins and surrounding regulations, as well as compliance and monitoring of virtual asset transactions.

Additionally the bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ctrl Alt, B2B alternative asset solutions provider, to explore infrastructure solutions related to tokenization of real-world assets.

Emirates NBD, a lMENAT banking group in the MENAT (Middle East, North Africa and Türkiye) region, has announced the extension of its Digital Asset Lab to now also include academia, through the launch of its Future Leaders Outreach Program. The program was launched at an event hosted at and facilitated by DIFC Innovation Hub, Emirates NBD’s long-term strategic partner.

The Digital Asset Lab currently has four members including founding members PwC and Fireblocks, and enterprise distributed ledger technology platform, R3 and the blockchain data platform, Chainalysis as additional members.

Through the Future Leaders Outreach Program and supported by early partners including the University of Sharjah and the Higher Colleges of Technology, the bank aims to drive its innovation mission while nurturing future talent and supporting the Dubai Economic Agenda D33. Academic partners will have access to masterclasses from Emirates NBD’s internal experts alongside industry specialists from Digital Asset Lab members Fireblocks, PwC, Chainalysis, and R3. These sessions will cover a range of innovative topics, including real-world business experiments. Through these hands-on learning opportunities, students will gain valuable insights into the evolving digital asset landscape and diverse applications across various industries.

The Digital Asset Lab was announced in May 2023 with the goal of enabling and accelerating digital asset and financial services innovation in the UAE.

Emirates NBD, in MENAT (Middle East, North Africa, and Türkiye) region, has partnered with Partior, a decentralized, programmable, and always-on platform making the global movement of liquidity more seamless, secure, and scalable, to explore participation in their blockchain platform for clearing and settlement, a collaboration that will offer Emirates NBD’s clients 24×7 availability, and faster, more seamless payment flows.

Emirates NBD will join the Partior network, becoming the first regional and UAE Dirham, Saudi Riyal and Indian Rupee settlement bank on the platform. In addition, Emirates NBD is looking to serve as a participating bank for major foreign currencies, in a move that bolsters its client offerings to provide real-time payments.

Launched in 2021, Partior is backed by DBS Bank, J.P. Morgan, Standard Chartered, Temasek, and Peak XV. The platform has pioneered the development of a blockchain-based unified ledger for payments, enabling real-time clearing and settlement for instant liquidity and transparency, and overcoming challenges commonly associated with sequential processing in legacy payment systems.

Emirates NBD is also evaluating an equity investment in Partior, a move that would represent a strategic alignment within the financial ecosystem aimed at redefining the future of global value exchange. By integrating with Partior’s blockchain-based unified ledger platform, the bank will enhance transparency, efficiency, and security in global payments and settlement processes.

It intends to serve Dubai initially as it plans expansion into MENA region. ‍

Additionally Chainalysis the blockchain data platform, joined Emirates NBD, digital asset Lab. Chainalysis, the blockchain data platform, will join professional services firm PwC, digital asset transfer and direct custody technology platform Fireblocks, and R3, an enterprise Distributed ledger technology platform, as founding council members of the Lab.

Ctrl Alt, a leading financial engineering and tokenization platform that utilizes blockchain technology, with offices in the UK and Ireland, has set up its office in Dubai UAE in DMCC ( Dubai Multi Commodities Center), after partnering with Emirates NBD. It intends to serve Dubai initially as it plans expansion into MENA region. ‍

Launched in 2022 by Matt Ong (formerly of Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse) to improve access to different assets through the power of tokenization, Ctrl Alt has since become one of the leaders in the tokenization space.

The company will initially focus on Dubai already partnering with Emirates NBD.

‍As per the press release, this expansion is driven by Dubai’s momentum and focus to accelerate the integration of tokenized assets across a variety of use cases and clients. Having already achieved significant success in the UK and Europe with $150m of assets under management, Ctrl Alt aims to replicate and expand upon this in the UAE.‍

The region will be led by Robert Farquhar, previously Senior Executive Officer at Prypco, a leading real estate and fractional real estate provider. Ctrl Alt has already tokenized a residential house in the UK and will look to further innovation of the real estate industry and other asset classes in Dubai and beyond. ‍

Emirates NBD the creator of Liv, UAE’s first digital bank has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ctrl Alt, B2B alternative asset solutions provider, to explore infrastructure solutions related to tokenization of real-world assets.
