GCC ( Gulf Cooperation Council) and MENA based Investcorp, a global alternative investment firm has led a $15 million investment round for BitMe a Spanish crypto exchange. Included in the list of investors was Telefonica Ventures, Stratminds VC, Cardano, and YGG Fund.

In April 2022 GCC headquartered Investcorp, launched eLydian Lion, the first dedicated institutional blockchain fund based in the GCC, with a global investment mandate (the “Fund”). The Blockchain ELydian Lion Fund, was led from Investcorp’s Abu Dhabi office UAE office, and was deployed globally with a focus on investments in companies leading the next digital evolution driven by blockchain technology.

At the time Investcorp noted that the Fund would mainly invest in early-stage companies operating in areas within the blockchain ecosystem such as blockchain infrastructure, platforms and exchanges, DeFi, (decentralized finance), and data analytics.

Fast forward, Investcorp has now invested in Bit2Me which will use the funds to grow its position in Spain, where the company was born, and to accelerate its expansion in Latin America.

“This funding will boost our acquisition of new customers specially thanks to Investcorp, an international partner with significant financial muscle, and to Telefónica, who will give us more channels in Latin America,” Leif Ferreira, co-founder and CEO of Bit2Me, said in a statement.

In July 2022, Bit2Me acquired a majority stake in the Peruvian peer Fluyez, in what was the first step of a search for acquisition opportunities in Chile, Colombia and Uruguay, the company said at the time.

In February, Bit2Me obtained approval from the Bank of Spain to be the first provider of services for the exchange of virtual currency for fiat currency and the custody of digital wallets.

Hervé François, Partner of the Blockchain/Digital Assets fund at Investcorp who is based in Abu Dhabi, stated on LinkedIn, “ I am thrilled to announce that I am joining the Board of Directors of Bit2Me alongside Investcorp Blockchain Fund’s investment in their latest round.”

He adds, “We are pleased to lead the investment in Bit2Me, a leading player in the digital asset space. Bit2Me is well positioned to capitalize on the growth in this rapidly evolving market, and Investcorp will actively support its strong management team. Very much looking forward to witnessing Bit2Me’s international growth as the best is yet to come!”

Investcorp becomes the second firm based out of GCC to invest in a crypto exchange, prior to that MEVP invested in Bahrain’s RAIN crypto exchange. The round was led by Middle East Venture Partners (MEVP), with participation of other global investors at the time.

MENA based Bank ABC has won two distinguished awards at Global Finance’s much-coveted The Innovators Awards -2023. The Bank’s innovation and digitization Centre, ABC Labs, has been named as one of “the World’s Best Financial Innovation Labs.

ABC bank is implementing the GCC region’s first blockchain based cross border instant payment solutions as well as CBDC project with the Central Bank of Bahrain. In 2020 The Central Bank of Bahrain collaborated with J P Morgan and Bank ABC in a pilot scheme to introduce instantaneous cross border payment solution leveraging state of the art technology and digital currency. The pilot was successfully completed in 2022.

Bank ABC along with J.P. Morgan will pilot the transferring of funds from and to the Kingdom of Bahrain in US-Dollars for payments from buyers to suppliers. This will lead to suppliers being paid faster and buyers originating payments in shorter time periods without the need for holding funds in advance. The Central Bank of Bahrain will act as a close partner in the pilot between Bank ABC and J.P. Morgan and going forward would look to extend the collaboration to Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs).

Global Finance’s Publisher & Editorial Director, Joseph Giarraputo notes, “Bank ABC continues to put digital innovation as a key strategic priority in providing world-class customer focused banking initiatives. It is playing a key role in the Gulf region’s first blockchain-based cross-border instant payment solution. Through ABC Labs, the Bank is collaborating with several central banks, including the Central Bank of Bahrain ‘CBB’, in studying and launching central bank digital currencies and is now scaling up its payment services for corporate clients.”

Bank ABC has also been presented with the ‘Top Innovations in Finance’ award, an accolade that underscores the Bank’s outstanding Digital Transformation Program which delivers an unparalleled, personalized banking experience to corporates and individuals.

The award was an acknowledgment of ABC bank’s commitment to emerging technologies such as AI, Blockchain and Data analytics.

Bank ABC’S Group CEO, Mr. Sael Al Waary said: “Innovation is at the heart of our strategy as we continue our digital transformation journey to build a more intuitive and sustainable bank of the future. We are honored and proud to accept this prestigious recognition for our world-class innovation lab, ABC Labs. This award acknowledges our commitment to staying ahead of the curve and embracing emerging technologies such as AI, Blockchain and Data Analytics. It is a testament to our commitment to delivering enhanced customer experiences and encourages us to continue to invest in our innovation and digital initiatives.”

Since inception, ABC Labs established the digital architecture and agile methodologies to enable the Bank’s strategic objectives. These steps enabled the launch of ‘ila Bank’ – a revolutionary digital mobile-only retail offering, and the development of an emotionally intelligent AI-powered digital assistant ‘Fatema’ among other achievements. Bank ABC’s digital transformation program has resulted in multiple ground-breaking digital deployments. Most recently, the Bank introduced a regional-first digital corporate onboarding service, reducing the account opening process to less than a day.  It is also digitising its Supply Chain Finance, Documentary Trade Finance and Cash management businesses.

CZ the Co-Founder of Binance has taken to twitter after word came out that the U.S. SEC ( Securities and Commodities Authority) has sued Binance US and its founder for providing trading for securities such as BNB, BUSD, SOL, ADA, MATIC, FIL, ATOM, SAND, MANA, ALGO, AXS, and COTI. The U.S. summarizes the case as a blatant disregard of the federal securities law and the investor and market protections these laws provide. The SEC states that Binance has enriched itself by billions of U.S. dollars while placing investors’ assets at significant risk.

The 13 charges come after the CFTC unveiled a similar complaint against Binance and Zhao earlier this year.

CZ on twitter stated, “4. Our team is all standing by; ensuring systems are stable, including withdrawals, and deposits.  We will issue a response once we see the complaint. Haven’t seen it yet. Media gets the info before we do.”

Charles Hoskinson of IOHK, who had tweeted, “With respect to Binance, I’m reading through the SEC complaint. It’s over 130 pages, but seems like the next in a series of steps to implement chokepoint 2.0 in the United States. The end goal is an agenda based CBDC partnered with a handful of massive banks and end-to-end control.”

To that CZ replies, “a perfect opportunity for the entire industry to set aside it’s fragmented nature and unite for a common sense set of rules and guidelines”

Binance issued a statement expressing its disappointment with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, stating that they have actively cooperated with SEC’s investigations and have worked hard to answer their questions and address their concerns.

The statement reads, “Most recently, we have engaged in extensive good-faith discussions to reach a negotiated settlement to resolve their investigations.  But despite our efforts, with its complaint today the SEC abandoned that process and instead chose to act unilaterally and litigate.  We are disheartened by that choice. “

They add, “We intend to defend our platform vigorously.  Unfortunately, the SEC’s refusal to productively engage with us is just another example of the Commission’s misguided and conscious refusal to provide much-needed clarity and guidance to the digital asset industry.”

According to Binance, an effective regulatory framework demands collaborative, transparent, and thoughtful policy engagement, a path the SEC has abandoned. Because of our size and global name recognition, Binance is an easy target now caught in the middle of a U.S. regulatory tug-of-war.”

It also explains that because Binance is not a U.S. exchange, the SEC’s actions are limited in reach.  Still, we stand with digital asset market participants in the U.S. in opposition to the SEC’s latest overreach, and we are prepared to fight it to the full extent of the law.

Talal Tabaa, Co-Founder of CoinMENA a crypto broker exchange, told LaraontheBlock, “Honestly, I am not surprised. The SEC has had Binance and CZ in their sights for a while now. Binance operations and ownership structure have always been opaque when compared to others. We will have to wait and see the extent of these charges because the SEC has been on a quite aggressive path with crypto and is pushing many onshore exchanges offshore.”

As for the bright side Tabaa adds, “Ethereum wasn’t listed as part of the assets that are centralized in nature which is a huge win.”

Waseem Mamlouk, Founder of NMB Fintech,  believes that the USA is going after crypto and SEC is the working end of that very focused policy. the USA via the SEC sees alternative assets such as Bitcoin as a threat to fiat currencies especially the US dollar which is the most hegemonic currency, and used in trade deals taking place 24 hours a day.

He adds, “Maintaining that portion size of global market is really big deal for the USA. In absolute terms the USA is biggest money printer in the world, making its product highly diluted which makes them go after all alternative assets and shut them down.

He explains, If you look at late 2021 BTC had a I trillion dollar market cap while today the entire crypto market is under a trillion, so things have changed.

The positive thing according to Mamlouk is that companies are looking to set up in crypto friendly jurisdictions. He notes that a company he is acquainted with which has a 100 million dollar hedge fund that includes stablecoins, early venture startups, Web3 and crypto companies are interested in seeking regulation in markets such as Bahrain.

He finally explains that if the US were to diversify large transactions could be settled in alternative assets, this would be good for US economy. For him the world is changing and as such we have to change with it. This is the natural evolution of economic systems and financial markets.

In conclusion he believes that if you put more things on blockchain, you will achieve more transparency, and trace transactions. Gone are the days where banks such as HSBC can launder money for drug cartels in Mexico. Blockchain and crypto bring more accountability traceability and transparency so the banking structure needs to evolve into this world.

So despite the bad news with SEC versus Binance, there is always a bright side.

During the Qatar Economic Forum organized by Bloomberg, Ola Doudin, Co-Founder and CEO of UAE based BitOasis participated in a panel alongside Yat Siu, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman of Animoca Brands to discuss “Harnessing the Power of Blockchain”

Doudin uncovered during the panel that BitOasis would be the first regulated virtual asset platform in KSA (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia). She stated, “We are working with regulators in KSA to be the first regulated platform in Saudi and other larger markets.”

She also mentioned that BitOasis is in discussions with regulators in Egypt and Morocco. She discussed how in both Egypt and Morocco, citizens are interested in access to tokenized dollars, better known as stablecoins especially in countries with high inflation rates and easy access to these stablecoins. According to her, this is a challenge to regulators and is something they will have to seriously look at.

This comes after BitOasis became the first crypto broker to receive an operational license from Dubai’s virtual asset regulator (VARA). BitOasis has also received preliminary approval for its license in Bahrain.

Interestingly Ola Doudin talked about the GCC’s growing interest in tokenization.

According to Doudin, “One of the biggest applications of interest in the Gulf region is tokenization because it can bring in new industries by tokenizing hard assets into liquid form through blockchain based tokens. We are seeing the Gulf region, KSA and UAE focusing on tokenized securities bringing more liquidity, more transparency from an investment standpoint in a regulated way.”

She adds that BitOasis is ready for tokenization of hard assets as it has already built a regulated infrastructure with the means to buy and sell tokenized assets and as such can support this movement.

She gives the example that in a recent BCG research it stated that in the next 10 years tokenization of assets will be worth $16 trillion.

OPNX exchange, which was recently tagged by Dubai’s VARA (Virtual Asset Regulatory Authority) as not regulated in the UAE, has been rumored to have investors from Bahrain, in the form of the Bahrain sovereign wealth fund given it has recently raised $25 million.

According to a  tweet by BitMEXcrypto exchange founder Arthur Hayes, “A little birdie told me that OPNX has raised big money from Bahrain Sovereign Wealth Fund. They are trading via Tai Ping Shan. Be Warned. I want my fucking money.”

Bahrain’s sovereign fund Mumtalakt website didn’t show any investment in OPNX directly but it is noted that the sovereign fund is an investor in Al Waha Fund whose portfolio consists of venture capital funds which could have invested in OPNX given that some of them have invested in crypto and blockchain entities before.

OPNX exchange  aims to tokenize users’ claims to bankrupted crypto companies, allowing them to use bankruptcy claims as collateral to trade perpetuals’.

Kyle Davies said the fundraising deal was done, but he didn’t disclose the investors. OPNX will acquire all assets of CoinFLEX including people, tech, and tokens. $FLEX will be the exchange token. As per OPNX website, “ A $20 billion market of claimants is desperately looking for a solution. This list includes FTX, Voyager, Celsius, Genesis, BlockFi, Mt Gox, and our creditors.”

According to the website, OPNX will combine the transparency of decentralized finance with the user experience of centralized finance platforms, so that traders no longer need to compromise on performance or security— allowing them to trade claims, spot and futures all on one platform, with one universal account.

OPNX is offering spot and futures trading for major tokens such as bitcoin (BTC), ether (ETH), dogecoin (DOGE) and USD coin (USDC). Claims’ trading is expected to go live in the coming weeks, according to Lamb.

CoinFLEX’s FLEX token will serve as the native token of the OPNX platform. Holders can get up to a 50% discount on trading fees with the token, which will be periodically burned, or permanently taken out of circulation. That may potentially improve value for FLEX holders in the future if demand and traction for OPNX increases and the supply gradually decrease.

Zhu Su and Kyle Davies, the founders of bankrupt hedge fund Three Arrows Capital, last month teamed with the co-founders of troubled crypto exchange CoinFLEX to create Open Exchange, calling it the “world’s first public marketplace for crypto claims trading and derivatives,” as CoinDesk reported
